What is glyphosate and why is it probably the cause of most of your health problems?

“Research recently performed in Germany detected glyphosate in the urine of all tested Berlin city residents, including one person who had been eating organic food for over 10 years [105].” Link

The known harmful effects of glyphosate is staggering, and at this point, it has become impossible to avoid, even if you are eating exclusively organic foods as noted in the quote above. And that guy was in Germany, not in the US where glyphosate is used much more intensively.

“Two-thirds of the total volume of glyphosate applied in the U.S. from 1974 to 2014 has been sprayed in just the last 10 years.

In 2014, farmers sprayed enough glyphosate to apply ~1.0 kg/ha (0.8 pound/acre) on every hectare of U.S.-cultivated cropland and nearly 0.53 kg/ha (0.47 pounds/acre) on all cropland worldwide.

Genetically engineered herbicide-tolerant crops now account for about 56 % of global glyphosate use. In the U.S., no pesticide has come remotely close to such intensive and widespread use. This is likely the case globally, but published global pesticide use data are sparse. Glyphosate will likely remain the most widely applied pesticide worldwide for years to come, and interest will grow in quantifying ecological and human health impacts.” Link

“Despite the growing and widespread use of glyphosate, a broad-spectrum herbicide and desiccant, very few studies have evaluated the extent and amount of human exposure.” Link

“Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup herbicide—the most widely used herbicide in the world. About 300 million pounds are applied each year in the U.S. alone, with much of the application in the Midwest corn and soybean states.

The chemical has come under fire as it's been linked to a host of health problems, including cancer, birth defects, damaged DNA, endocrine disruption and reproductive issues. There are currently hundreds of lawsuits from farmers and others claiming that Roundup gave them cancer. A federal judge in San Francisco is reviewing the science behind the chemical's link to cancer.

In the new study, researchers tested 71 pregnant women in Central Indiana. They found more than 90 percent of the women have glyphosate in their urine, and women with higher levels of the chemical were more likely to have shorter pregnancies. “ Link

Part of understanding how this chemical could be so harmful is understanding what it was originally intended to do: chelate (soak up) minerals like magnesium and calcium as an industrial descaling agent. It’s also patented as an anti-microbial, and get this, a “biocide” (any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, or mitigating any living organism (e.g., plant, animal).)

What minerals have been shown to be deficient in crops treated with glyphosate?

Other studies showed that treatment with increasing glyphosate rates (five doses from 0.6 to 2.4 kg a.e./ha, applied either in a single dose or sequentially) decreased photosynthetic parameters in leaf tissues of GR first-generation soybean in a linear fashion and reduced accumulation of macronutrients (in the order Ca > Mg > N > S > K > P) and micronutrients (in the order Fe > Mn > Co > Zn > Cu > B > Mo), compared to the near-isogenic non-resistant parental line (Zobiole et al. 2010b). Water use efficiency was reduced too (Zobiole et al. 2010c).” Link

Calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, sulfur, potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, cobalt, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum. Might you be missing some of these?

So, glyphosate is everywhere, in everything and everyone. It has bound up much of the essential minerals in our soil. And it is a patented poison.

“A significant increase in disease severity associated with the wide spread application of the glyphosate herbicide can be the result of direct glyphosate-induced weakening of plant defenses and increased pathogen population and virulence.” Link

If it’s doing that to the plants, what’s it doing to whoever eats the plants (livestock or humans?)

Well, we can take a look at an alarming number of diseases whose rates of increasing prevalence correlate (not proven to cause, but can this many correlations be a fluke?) directly to the increasing use of glyphosate:

Do we have evidence to conclude that these correlations are more than likely a direct causative link to glyphosate (and pharmaceutical drug use?) Yes, we do!

“Many types of chemicals, including pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs, cause metabolic acidosis and mitochondrial disorder. We provide evidence from the scientific literature that glyphosate can be metabolized by humans, that it disrupts the intestinal microbiota, causes severe metabolic acidosis when ingested in high doses and leads to mitochondrial dysfunction by uncoupling of phosphorylation. The symptoms and diseases associated with metabolic acidosis and mitochondrial dysfunction compare well with those attributed to glyphosate. Taken together, this evidence suggests that glyphosate, in the doses equivalent to allowed residues in food ingested over a long period of time, causes a low-grade, chronic acidosis as well as mitochondrial dysfunction. We also provide evidence from the literature supporting the biochemical pathways whereby this occurs. We then extract the reports for symptoms and diseases associated with glyphosate from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Adverse Event Reporting System database. These are compared to the symptoms and diseases reported in the database for drugs that are known to cause mitochondrial dysfunction. The results are startlingly consistent. Finally, we hypothesize that many modern diseases are primarily acquired mitochondrial disorders caused by chemical pesticides, pharmaceutical drugs, food additives and industrial chemicals. “ Link

Do we understand the mechanism by which this process is happening? Yes, we do!

Reports of neural defects and craniofacial malformations from regions where glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are used led us to undertake an embryological approach to explore the effects of low doses of glyphosate in development … Therefore, we conclude that the phenotypes produced by GBH are mainly a consequence of the increase of endogenous retinoid activity.” Link

We used electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) to investigate the subcellular distribution of Mg in HL60 cells (a promyelocytic leukemia cell line) before and after retinoic acid (RA)-induced differentiation … we observed a significant decrease (-20%) in cellular Mg content in RA-differentiated HL60 cells … differentiation was accompanied by a 30% decrease in the nuclear K/Na ratio. After differentiation, cellular ATP and ADP content decreased by 31 and 40%, respectively. We conclude that during exit from the cell cycle, Mg redistributes within cells and that the decrease in cytoplasmic and mitochondrial Mg is accompanied by a decrease in ATP and ADP content.” Link

So, you might already know how important magnesium is, which is shown above to be important to ATP levels in the cells, but it’s overall importance pales in comparison to that of ATP, without which, human life would not exist:

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis. Found in all forms of life, ATP is often referred to as the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer.[1] When consumed in metabolic processes, it converts either to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) or to adenosine monophosphate (AMP).” Link
